The Caprice Viennois concert series takes place in the Mozart Hall of the Vienna Konzerthaus, which offers the perfect setting for this unique concert series.

Venues: Konzerthaus

The Program

In a version of Fritz Kreisler’s “Caprice Viennois” adapted especially for this concert, conductor Daniel Auner will also shine as a virtuoso violin soloist in this concert. Daniel Auner plays a unique instrument by Giovanni Battista Guadagnini from the Austrian National Bank’s collection of valuable string instruments.

The Monti Csardas, interpreted by the long-time concertmaster of the Vienna Hofburg Orchestra Christian Scholl, is another highlight of the concert.

The evening is completed with the elegance and joyfulness of Mozart‘s most famous opera arias and the most beautiful melodies from the operettas by Strauss, Léhàr and Kalman.
The rousing waltzes and polkas by Johann and Josef Strauss let you feel the lightness of Viennese life and musically transport you to historic Vienna at the end of the 19th century.

Daniel Auner – conductor and solo violinist

For Daniel Auner, conducting is a logical continuation and extension of his work as a violinist. Even the movement of the bow arm can be perfectly translated into the conductor’s strike, which Auner made use of for many years as a “standing violinist” in the best tradition of his hometown Vienna.

At the Caprice Viennois concert series, Daniel Auner will revive this old philharmonic tradition and conduct the orchestra as solo violinist.
This violin conducting was created in the “Tanzkapelle” (dance bands) surrounding the Strauss dynasty. Here, orchestral direction by a standing violinist became established on the international stage, with the concertmaster leading the ensemble from the first podium.

Violin conducting became internationally popular through Willi Boskovsky (1909 – 1991), who conducted the Vienna Philharmonic as a “standing violinist” in 1955 and 1979 and helped the orchestra achieve worldwide popularity.

Composer Fritz Kreisler (1875 – 1962)

Fritz Kreisler was one of the most famous violinists and composers of the 20th century. He entered the Vienna Conservatory at the age of seven, making him the youngest child prodigy ever admitted. His impressive life story took him to Paris and Rome, as well as to the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonics. He had to serve briefly in the Austrian army during the First World War and was wounded. In 1939, Fritz Kreisler finally moved to New York to protest against the National Socialist regime, where he lived until the end of his life.

Daniel Auner about Fritz Kreisler:

“Fritz Kreisler has fascinated me since my childhood. I devoured his biography, his diary “Four Weeks in the Trenches – The War Story of a Violinist” as well as his famous essay “Music and Life” is an extremely honest approach to the ups and downs of a musician’s life.”

Konzerthaus Vienna – Mozart Hall

The Mozart Hall is the second largest hall in the Konzerthaus Vienna.
Its 704 seats are divided into balcony and ground floor. For a classical concert it provides both an informal intimacy and the necessary space for a fantastic musical experience.

The Mozart Hall enjoys a worldwide reputation for its unique acoustics.
As a result, it is used for sound recordings on a regular basis and makes the Mozart Hall particularly popular with leading orchestras and soloists.
