It opened in 1869 with the opera Don Juan by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

The State Opera was built within 8 years in the Neo-Renaissance style according to plans by August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll and is one of the most prominent landmarks in Vienna.
