He was born on January 27th 1756 in Salzburg and was baptized as Joannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Gottlieb; his family called him Wolfgang. Later he chose the Latin version of his middle name Gottlieb and thus went down in music history as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.<\/p>\n<p>His father was deputy Kapellmeister to the court orchestra of the Archbishop of Salzburg, and so little Wolfgang was surrounded by music from an early age on. His father systematically yet carefully promoted Wolfgang\u2019s playful musical experiments.<\/p>\n<p>Wolfgang began to play the piano when he was 3 years old, at 4 his first compositions were put on paper, at 7 he was able to play the violin and shortly after also the organ \u2013 although he had to do so standing up. It is said that 6-year old Wolfgang climbed on Empress Maria Theresia\u2019s lap to give her a kiss.<\/p>\n<p>Soon after, Mozart set out for a 4-year journey visiting Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and England. Three journeys to Italy between 1770 and 1773 followed.<\/p>\n<p>These concert tours were intended to present Wolfgang to Europe\u2019s royalty and peers and to arrange meetings with top-class musicians as well as renowned scientists and artists so that he would have important contacts for his future career.<\/p>\n<p>Highlights included a performance for the English Royal Family, the award of the title Ritter vom Goldenen Sporn (Knight of the Golden Spur) bestowed upon him by the Pope, and the admission into the \u201cAccademia filarmonica\u201c in Bologna.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]<div class=\"dfd-spacer-module\"  data-units=\"px\" data-wide_resolution=\"1280\" data-wide_size=\"30\" data-normal_resolution=\"1024\" data-normal_size=\"30\" data-tablet_resolution=\"800\" data-tablet_size=\"30\" data-mobile_resolution=\"480\" data-mobile_size=\"30\" style=\"height: 30px;\"><\/div><div class=\"dfd-heading-shortcode\"><div class=\"dfd-heading-module-wrap  text-left style_05 dfd-heading-6a5cd030959db dfd-enable-resposive-headings\" id=\"dfd-heading-6a5cd030959db\" ><div class=\"inline-block\"><div class=\"dfd-heading-module\"><div class=\"widget-title dfd-title block-title\" style=\"\"><\/p>\n<h2>Mozart in Vienna: Freedom, Love and Success<\/h2>\n<p><\/div><div class=\"dfd-heading-delimiter dfd-img-lazy-load\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><script type=\"text\/javascript\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t(function($) {\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t$(\"head\").append(\"<style>.dfd-heading-6a5cd030959db.dfd-heading-module-wrap .dfd-heading-module .dfd-heading-delimiter {border-bottom-style:solid;border-bottom-width:1px;width:100px;border-bottom-color:#aa812e;}.dfd-heading-6a5cd030959db.dfd-heading-module-wrap .dfd-heading-module .dfd-heading-delimiter {margin-top:10px;margin-bottom:20px;}<\/style>\");\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t})(jQuery);\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/script><\/div>[vc_column_text]At the age of 13 the Salzburg Archbishop Siegmund Graf Schrattenbach accepted Wolfgang into the Hofkapelle (court orchestra).<\/p>\n<p>Having traveled the world Wolfgang felt constricted in Salzburg and dreamt of being employed at a large court. Many years of efforts to achieve such as status were however unsuccessful.<\/p>\n<p>Since 1772, a new Archbishop Hieronymus Colloredo had reigned in Salzburg and his relation to the Mozarts was increasingly strained. During a stay in Vienna the conflict escalated when a servant of the Archbishop kicked Wolfgang, and young Mozart then terminated his employment at the Salzburg Hofkapelle (1781).<\/p>\n<p>Although without income for a while, Wolfgang was a happy man as he was in love. One year later he married Konstanze Weber, who in fact was the sister of his first tempestuous love Aloysia, a girl with whom he originally had planned his future at the age of 22, four years previously.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly before his wedding the opera \u201cDie Entf\u00fchrung aus dem Serail\u201c (The Abduction from the Seraglio) premiered. At the end of 1784, Wolfgang Mozart joined the freemason lodge \u201eZur Wohlt\u00e4tigkeit\u201c.<\/p>\n<p>The wedding plans did not suit both families, but they were a fitting couple and their 9-year marriage was harmonious, although it was clouded by the death of 4 out of 5 children and Konstanze\u2019s severe illness that broke out 1789.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Mainly because of the Opera&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Within a short time Mozart managed to become the most popular and highest paid musician in Vienna.<\/p>\n<p>Kaiser Josef II was Mozart\u2019s special patron, also bonded by their masonship. Mozart\u2019s suggestion to write an opera about aristocratic privileges and feudal arbitrariness is a sure sign that he was aware of the Emperor\u2019s political intentions.<\/p>\n<p>Josef II was in the process of curbing the aristocrats\u2019 powers to centralize authority in himself\u2026. Mid-1786 saw the premiere of \u201cDie Hochzeit des Figaro\u201d (<strong>The Marriage of Figaro<\/strong>). The aristocrats in the audience understood the warning and boycotted further performances. However, shortly after the opera was a great success in Prague.<\/p>\n<p>Here Mozart also was requested to write his next opera \u201c<strong>Don Giovanni<\/strong>\u201d, that premiered in 1787 in Prague and was enthusiastically accepted by the audience.<\/p>\n<p>The Viennese audience took offense at the plot and considered it to be too rough for the \u201ck. k. National-Hoftheater\u201c (Royal Theatre). Even the wonderful music couldn\u2019t change that attitude. Opportunism is definitely something Mozart can\u2019t be accused of in any situation in his life.<\/p>\n<p>His next opera \u201c<strong>Cos\u00ed fan tutte<\/strong>\u201d again provoked a scandal due to the displayed \u201cimmorality\u201d. Then the Turkish War that started in 1788 and strongly constricted Vienna\u2019s social life, as well as Konstanze\u2019s illness, led to a financial bottleneck for Mozart.<\/p>\n<p>Although he wasn\u2019t afraid of polarizing the audience with his operas. Mozart was a big star in his time and earned enormous sums. However, his lifestyle was costly and he didn\u2019t waste a thought on savings or provisions. The opera wasn\u2019t performed at the Hoftheater (Court Theatre) but at the popular Freihaustheater (today Theatre an der Wien), at the time a suburban stage.<\/p>\n<p>The opera\u2019s fairytale-like storyline is full of symbols and innuendos that convey the freemason\u2019s ideas of Enlightenment. Once again Mozart demonstrated moral courage, as the freemasons were under surveillance by the state police.<\/p>\n<p>The anonymous assignment for a <strong>requiem<\/strong> in 1791 later gave reason to speculate about Mozart\u2019s death. The assignment came from Count Walsegg-Stuppach, who planned to stage the piece as his own work. Mozart however only completed a draft of the requiem.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of November 1791 Mozart fell ill and died on the 5th of December at 1am in his apartment in Rauhensteingasse.<\/p>\n<p>Mozart was buried in a common grave which was neither a consequence of his alleged poverty nor of Konstanze\u2019s lovelessness.
